About the Artist
California Dreaming
Expression through art is the core of who I am.
Lucinda Johnson is a native California artist whose impressionistic painting style lends itself to well to her primary subjects: the diverse landscapes, seascapes and skyscapes of the West. Lucinda’s works have earned numerous Best of Show, Awards of Excellence and other top awards in local and international gallery and online competitions. In addition to open exhibition entries, Lucinda's paintings have also been included (by invitation) in group, duo and solo gallery exhibitions. Her gallery and commissioned paintings are widely collected.
She paints both en plein air, and in her studio in Roseville, California with soft pastels, transparent watercolors and oils. You will rarely see Lucinda without a camera or sketching/painting gear nearby. In addition to living in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento valley areas of California, she also has lived in Oregon and Arizona – all the while collecting a vast collection of reference photographs. One of Lucinda’s degrees is in professional photography.
Mainly through self-taught studies and workshops with numerous, well-known professional artists in a wide array of mediums, art has always been a way for Lucinda to share the beauty and diversity of nature she has observed during her travels. Studying photography gave her a unique insight to recognizing unique lighting, identify/capture subtle colors nuances and enhance shapes.
“I focus on considering which medium will best convey what I have envisioned for the finished painting. My favorite aspects of using soft pastels is the immediacy of the medium (SO MANY different types of mark making possibilities), the brilliance of the colors and watching the many layers interact. I more recently discovered watercolors and oils. Painting with these mediums is spontaneous yet additionally requires planning, teaches me about color mixing, and yields unique textures as well as minute details.”
